Moving
can be a very stressful experience. From packing, to transportation and
unpacking, every step of the process is time-consuming. So when a young
couple from the West Midlands in England found a man on Facebook to
hire as a mover, they jumped on the opportunity. Unfortunately, that
decision turned out to be horrible mistake for Becky Szenk and her
fiancé Mark Higgin--one that left them without all of their worldly
possessions.
The couple found the mover, who identified himself as Lee Green, through
a Facebook page that was advertising his services. On the day of the
move, two men arrived at the couple’s apartment, and packed everything
up in the moving van in just 45 minutes. The two men then drove off,
with the couple thinking they would be meeting them at their new place
just eight miles away.
‘Everything
was normal as far as I was aware,’ 22-year-old Becky explained. ‘We had
a general conversation. I really never suspected anything,’ she
continued. While the couple had initially thought the movers’ speed had
to do with professionalism, they now realize that they were simply in a
hurry to get away with their stolen goods.
The
movers got away with everything except the couple’s television, which
they had planned to transport themselves for fear that it might break in
the move. The stolen items include a fridge, washing machine, and even
Becky’s engagement ring, along with all of their personal belongings and
prized possessions.
‘I
am so distraught that they have taken my engagement ring and my baby’s
toys,’ Becky said. ‘It’s left us absolutely heartbroken. We can get new
furniture but the personal stuff cannot be replaced,’ she continued. The
Facebook page advertising the moving services of Lee Green was removed
shortly after the theft took place.
While
the West Midlands Police investigate the alleged theft, family and
friends have stepped in to offer what they can. ‘Some very kind people
have made some amazing donations,’ Mark said. ‘We’d just like to say
thank you to everyone,’ he continued.
Though
the couple are still heartbroken that they’ve been left ‘with virtually
nothing,’ they’re hoping that their story can at least help others.
‘It’s been a big lesson to learn. I just hope others can be more careful
about trusting people they book over social media as I would for this
to happen to anyone else,’ Becky said. A Gofundme page has been set up
for the young couple to help them replace their belongings.
